NJACI Dinner Meeting (3/24/2015)

Date: on 3/24/15

The New Jersey Chapter ACI invited Jean H. Laird, P.E., Senior Project engineering in Structures Design Division and Joseph J. Sheedy, P.E., Project Engineer, Construction Division in New Jersey Turnpike Authority and Gregory P. Johnson, Branch Manager in Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. to the dinner meeting on 3/24/2015.

Topic: This presentation will discuss the multi-faceted design approach for bridge deck reconstruction on a 2.2 mile complex viaduct that is part of the New Jersey Turnpike’s heavily traveled Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension, that links the Turnpike Mainline at Interchange 14 (Newark Airport) to the Holland Tunnel in downtown Jersey City, New Jersey. Driven by the need to accelerate construction and minimize traffic disruption without compromising construction quality, several different solutions were derived to best fit the unique characteristics of the viaduct. The solutions included use of a high early strength high performance concrete (HES HPC) mix design specifically developed for this project to meet extremely restrictive lane closing availability and to minimize early age deck cracking. Modified ACI 305/306 provisions were implemented and maturity logging was used to monitor strength development.
