International Student Engineering Experience (ISEE)

The Rutgers International Student Engineering Experiences program (ISEE) allows students from universities and institutions abroad to experience engineering at Rutgers University. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of engineering and enrich their cultural identity.

When Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea was looking for an exchange program, they turned to Rutgers. Civil Engineering program focused on newly emerging areas of sensor technologies for on-line real-time-health monitoring and management of critical infrastructure. Students learned firsthand how smart sensors coupled with computer models are deployed to enhance and sustain operations, safety, and security in various types of infrastructure, such as bridges, tunnels, roads, and traffic control.

As with most ISEE programs, the Kyung Hee program included English as a Second Language (ESL) training and field trips to the New Jersey Traffic Control Center, George Washington Bridge, and historic Philadelphia.

The civil engineering laboratory program introduced topics such as advanced structural analysis and monitoring technologies, computer modeling, structural monitoring using smart sensors, and mini-scale bridge construction and testing. Students learned the basic principal of computer modeling, structural design and analysis and field-testing. For lab sessions, students were organized into teams and build a lightweight balsa designs, ending in load testing of their balsa bridges and a winner declared for the team with the strongest bridge. Model trusses were also built and tested.

CROSS CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
The Rutgers School of Engineering recognizes the global nature of the engineering profession and the value of multi-national experiences. To facilitate a global reach, the School offers numerous international programs and opportunities for cross-cultural interaction among engineering students. The International Student Engineering Experiences (ISEE) program allows students from universities and institutions abroad to experience engineering at Rutgers University. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and enrich their cultural identity.

FOCUS ON AMERICAN ENGINEERING
Our Engineering programs delve into concepts covering newly emerging areas uniquely coupled with traditional American engineering practices. The students will learn the basic principles of selective areas, special topics, and real world case studies and computer modeling.

BLENDED PROGRAMS
Each program is custom developed to meet the needs of your group of students, and typically includes an engineering component in a select discipline, ESL instruction, and extra-curricular activities. Our ESL component offers tailored instruction in the English language to non-native speakers enrolled in the program. Before beginning the ESL courses, students will be evaluated and if needed, placed in groups depending on English proficiency. At the conclusion, assessments are provided.

FACULTY AND STAFF
During the program, students will work closely with Rutgers students and faculty on various lab exercises, and lectures. Students get first-hand experience on the current research, and the latest curriculum offered to Rutgers undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, University students are hired to accompany visiting students on various extracurricular activities such as sporting events and field trips, with special emphases on initiating casual conversation to supplement their ESL program.
